I was born in Regina and studied at the University of Regina and University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, graduating with a Bachelors degree in economics and fine arts. After a 27 year career with Environment Canada, I retired in 2004 and became a full-time painter.
Being primarily a landscape painter came naturally to me as a result of years spent working at Environment Canada and a love of skiing, hiking and fly fishing. Photographic images form the basis for my work. I love searching for the perfect image which inspires me to have to translate it into a painting. If this initial excitement can be transferred to the viewer, the painting is successful.
The endless and ever-changing prairie sky and weather always fascinate, inspire and challenge. Of particular interest is what photographers refer to as the Magic Hour, the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset. It provides the perfect warm golden light for stunning images. Also, the Blue Hour is of interest, when the sun is just about to rise or has just set. The Northern Lights and the night sky will provide future subjects of interest and challenge.
The sky, land and water always interact in a time-of-day, seasonal and weather-related dance. Spring brings longer days with more sunlight hours. And with that, wonderful flowers and blossoms, renewed old and brand new plants and vegetation, Summer in the prairies is a time of endless vistas with stunning fields of canola, wheat and flax which go on forever and are interspersed with parklands, lakes and rivers. Autumn is vivid colours, warm light and long shadows which create the perfect opportunity for wonderful images to paint. Winter.....hmmmm...a time to paint spring, summer and fall landscapes.
